Well, now we know what caused our computer problems. It’s malware. According to Wikipedia, “Malware, short for malicious software, is software used or created to disrupt computer operation, gather sensitive information, or gain access to private computer systems….” There’s a lot more to it, but that’s the basic gist of what we’re dealing with here.
We have pretty strong anti-viral software that runs regularly and we thought we had strong firewall protection. When you read that, please do not for one second think I know all about those things—my husband is the one who handles all of that for me. I simply hit a few buttons to run a scan periodically. What I do know is that WE thought we were protected from such ugly intrusions. So where did it come from and how do we get rid of it? The answer lies somewhere in the 12 pages of instructions to remove this stuff that my husband plans to implement in just a short time.
This particular piece of malware is showing up a lot lately. We have no idea where it came from, but it’s pretty ‘popular’ at the moment. What we do know is that it is designed to make you think that all your information and programs are lost so that you will sign up for a ‘cure’ that allows the people on the creative end of this nastiness to steal your financial information and possibly your identity.
Sounds a bit like sin to me. We may think we’re protected because we have systems (church attendance, good friends, Bible reading, etc.) in place that are regular parts of our lives. We may have made a decision for Christ and been going along without a care in the world. Like malware, it is just when we get comfortable that our ‘systems’ are working, that sin can hit and take us unaware. It doesn’t have to be BIG sin (although God doesn’t categorize—we do, right?). It can be a wrong attitude or an inappropriate joke that gets laughs, a TV show or a book that can start things rolling. Just like malware, sin is designed to steal our identity and make us think all is lost.
Don’t believe that for a second. Today is the perfect time to consult our user manual –the Bible–to strengthen our protection and be reminded of how big our God is. There really is a cure for sin and it won’t cost us a dime—that bill has already been paid. Run a spiritual scan today. Let’s make sure we look like what we say we are and that we’re functioning properly so we don’t become ‘malware’ for the Kingdom.
(BTW, if you don’t already know who you really are in Christ, feel free to drop me a contact comment below. I’d love to show you all the great things God has to say about you!)
