“I don’t think the Lord wants any pompous proclamation of thanks on one Thursday in November as much as He wants a little humble service from us every day in the year.” — Burton Hills
Well, ok then! (smile)
Because this is the month of Thanksgiving, I thought I’d make that my theme for our weekends. I began to search for quotes about the holiday…and the action of actually giving thanks. This is a quote that I’ve apparently saved for some time. It may seem a bit brusque at first, but I happen to agree with it.
Whether or not you believe in God, there’s always something to be thankful for each day. Because that’s true, the act of giving thanks should be a part of every day–not just reserved for the 4th Thursday of November (or the 2nd Monday of October, for our Canadian friends).
As I searched through my files, I was reminded of another saying that dovetails nicely here: “Words are cheap.” Well, sometimes they can be. Words are often necessary, but actions bring our words to life.
Your challenge for this weekend is to put some ‘oomph’ behind your words. Think of someone that you’re glad to have in your life…someone you’re thankful to know. Find a way to render a little service to them this weekend. It could be as simple as washing the dishes or offering a hot cup of coffee, baking a batch of cookies or sending a funny card. Whatever you choose, make sure you take time to actually say “thanks!” to them, as well. Words may be cheap, but they’re always nice to hear!
